New Student Orientation

Steps to help you prepare

Before you get started, make sure you know your 10-digit University ID. You can find it on your admissions notices or look it up using the access management system.

Look up University ID

If you have not yet been admitted to IU South Bend, please contact the Office of Admissions before signing up for advising and registration.

After you create or reactivate your account, login to verify that your IU Email is set up (it may take up to 24 hours).

Create your account

If you have trouble activating your account, contact the UITS Help Desk at (574) 520-5555 or sbhelp@iu.edu.

You can complete any of these steps prior to making your advising appointment in step 3.

  • Complete Part I of the New Student Orientation on Canvas, which will help you best prepare for your appointment. Estimated completion time is 20-30 minutes.
  • Continually check your personal email, which is where all confirmations, reminders, and other details will be sent.

In-Person

  • Arrive at the time indicated on your orientation confirmation email, which will include location, parking, and other details. If you have questions or did not receive a confirmation, call (574) 520-5005.

Virtual

  • Ensure that you are in a distraction-free environment for the duration of your appointment.
  • Please use a computer, laptop or tablet as your advisor will be utilizing screen share to assist you in registering for classes.
  • 5 minutes prior to your appointment, log in to Zoom. You will find your appointment time, Zoom link, and other deetails in the appointment reminder email.
    • If you have difficulties logging in to Zoom, or did not receive a reminder email with your appointment time and Zoom link, call (574) 520-5005.
  • Once logged in, you will be in the main room and a staff member will send you to a breakout room with your advisor. There you will meet with your advisor to answer any questions you have and get enrolled in classes for the spring semester.

  • Go through Part II of the New Student Orientation on Canvas at your own pace. You can also review the information in Part I.
  • Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) if you haven’t already done so.
  • Download the following apps (from Google Play or the App Store): IU Mobile, Handshake, Penji, Corq, TimelyCare, Outlook and Rave Guardian.
  • Update your settings in IU Notify, so you can receive campus alerts.
  • Set up Third Party Access if you need a parent or someone else to have access to billing and financial aid info. Remember, the University cannot speak to anyone else other than the student unless this access is given.
